And when it comes to our products, we are meticulous about the ingredients we use. We’re also 100% transparent about those ingredients, which is why we’ve detailed every single one in this glossary.

ABYSSINIAN OIL
Products we use it in: Utility Oil
What it is: Abyssinian oil, also known as "Crambe Abyssinica Seed Oil," is extracted from the seeds of the Crambe Abyssinica plant, which is commonly found in tropical northeastern Africa.
Why we use it: Abyssinian oil is loaded with omega fatty acids and emollients that condition the skin. It helps soften and soothe skin while reinforcing the skin’s protective layer, helping to prevent dehydration. Abyssinian oil is non-greasy and adds instant shine, hydration, and protection to hair. Abyssinian oil is not known to impact the body’s natural production of DHT, making it an excellent essential oil for Beard Oil.

AMINOMETHYL PROPANOL
Products we use it in: Utility Wash
What it is: Aminomethyl propranolol is an aliphatic alcohol used in cosmetic products to balance pH levels. Aminomethyl propanol receives criticism as a cosmetic ingredient because it can cause irritation, particularly in the eyes. However, studies have found aminomethyl propanol to be safe for use in quantities of 2% or less in cosmetic formulas. Beardbrand uses less than 1% aminomethyl propanol in Beardbrand Utility Wash.
Why we use it: Aminomethyl propanol helps to make the pH levels of Beardbrand Utility Wash similar to the skin’s pH. It also helps other beneficial ingredients penetrate the skin.

What it is: Aloe vera is a clear gel harvested from the leaves of aloe vera plants that has been used for over 6,000 years.
Why we use it: Aloe vera soothes, softens, and hydrates the skin while combating excessive oil buildup, dandruff, and bacteria.

ALOE BARBADENSIS LEAF POWDER

What it is: Aloe barbadensis leaf powder is created by grinding dried aloe vera leaves. It has been used for centuries to treat sunburns, scrapes, cuts, rashes, and dry skin.
Why we use it: Aloe barbadensis leaf powder contains vitamin C, B1, B2, B3, B4, and B12, as well as essential minerals including potassium, calcium, sodium, manganese, magnesium, silicon, iron, lithium, and copper. Aloe barbadensis leaf powder soothes, softens, and hydrates skin while combating excessive oil buildup, dandruff, and bacteria. It was used in our retired version of Beardbrand Sea Salt Spray.

APRICOT KERNEL OIL PEG-8 ESTERS
Products we use it in: N/A
What it is: Apricot kernel oil peg-8 esters are obtained by the transesterification of prunus armeniaca (apricot) kernel oil and peg-8 (polymers of ethylene glycol). In other words, it’s created during the chemical reaction between apricot kernel oil and alcohol.
Why we use it: Apricot kernel oil peg-8 esters are absorbed quickly into the skin, providing nourishment and protection. They also have excellent solubilizing, dispersing, emulsifying, and lubricating properties. It was used in the retired version of Beardbrand Shampoo.

ASTROCARYUM MURUMURU SEED BUTTER
Products we use it in: Utility Balm
What it is: Murumuru butter is a palm butter extracted from Amazonian astrocaryum murumuru trees. It is similar to cocoa butter but is less comedogenic, meaning it won't clog your pores.
Why we use it: Murumuru butter is an excellent skin and hair moisturizer that helps lock in hydration without clogging pores. It's good for sensitive skin and has shown the potential to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

BABASSU OIL
Products we use it in: Utility Oil
What it is: Babassu oil, also known as, "Orbignya Oleifera Seed Oil," is a tropical oil extracted from the seeds of babassu palm trees.
Why we use it: Babassu oil is packed with antioxidants and healthy fats and is known for its anti-inflammatory benefits for the skin. It is lightweight, non-greasy, and absorbs quickly.

BEHENTRIMONIUM CHLORIDE
Products we use it in: Utility Softener
What it is: Behentrimonium chloride is an organic compound made from colza oil obtained from brassica rapa subsp. oleifera (the turnip rape plant). It has a wax-like consistency and is an effective conditioning ingredient.
Why we use it: Behentrimonium chloride conditions, detangles, fights static, softens, and helps to straighten hair. Because it’s plant-based, it doesn’t coat the hair. Instead, it penetrates the hair shaft and provides deeper conditioning.

Why we use it: Caprylic/Capric triglycerides help give the Utility Bar a silky smooth feel and allow the ingredients in Beardbrand Styling Paste and Utility Bar to penetrate the skin while creating a light, non-greasy protective barrier on the surface.

What it is: Cera Flava and Cera Alba are types of beeswax produced by bees. Cera Flava is yellow wax that comes directly from the honeycomb. Cera Alba is white beeswax created by bleaching yellow beeswax.
Why we use it: Beeswax helps to form a light barrier on the skin, allowing it to retain moisture.

Beardbrand fragrances contain a combination of primarily natural oils for fragrance. Fragrances are formulated to comply with International Fragrance Association (IFRA) Code of Practice. All fragrances are phthalate free and use natural, naturally derived, and safe synthetics in the formulation of the fragrance.

What it is: Gellan gum is a naturally occurring, vegan food additive and cosmetic ingredient produced by the bacterium Sphingomonas elodea.
Why we use it: Gellan gum helps to emulsify and stabilize the retired versions of our Beardbrand Shampoo and Conditioner so that the products don’t change with temperature fluctuations.

What it is: Glycerin is a naturally occurring substance found in both animal fat and vegetables—including human skin. Glycerin is a known humectant that attracts moisture out of the air and is commonly used in cosmetic products due to its lubricating and conditioning abilities. Glycerin is also an effective carrier oil and is often paired with other skin-softening ingredients because it helps evenly distribute them throughout the formulation.
Why we use it: Beardbrand uses vegetable-based glycerin. Glycerin is used in trace amounts as a carrier oil in Beardbrand Sea Salt Spray, helping disperse the natural preservative, grapefruit seed extract, throughout the product. In Beardbrand Utility Wash and Utility Softener, glycerin is used for its ability to lock in moisture.
