Top 10 Ways To Use Utility Oil

In this day and age, everyone knows what beard oil does and how to use it. But you may be wondering, what the heck is Utility Oil?!

In this blog, we’re going to break down why we changed the name of Beardbrand Beard Oil to Beardbrand Utility Oil and all the ways that your beard, hair, and skin can benefit from it.

Sure, we could have gone on for years selling Beardbrand Beard Oil as-is in a small, 1 oz. glass bottle. But when we break down the ingredients, calling it just Beard Oil feels like a disservice. Our award-winning blend of jojoba, abyssinian, castor, and babassu oils isn’t just the best beard oil on the market—it’s also a fantastic hair oil, skin moisturizer, pre-and-post-shave oil, and undereye serum.

Let’s dig a little deeper into the four main carrier oils that make Beardbrand Utility Oil the only oil you’ll ever need (sans motor oil):

Jojoba Oil: The chemical structure of jojoba oil resembles sebum—that all-important oil your body naturally produces—making jojoba oil an all-around banger of an ingredient for keeping dry, itchy skin at bay.

Abyssinian Oil: Abyssinian oil is lightweight and absorbed quickly into hair and skin. Loaded with Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids and Vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, C, and E, Abyssinian oil helps improve hair texture and hydration. Oh yeah, all those antioxidants have been shown to reduce inflammation and slow down the effects of aging.

Castor Oil: Castor oil forms a protective barrier on the skin, preventing too much moisture from escaping. It's also great for preventing split ends and softening hair while adding a healthy shine.

Babassu Oil: Babassu oil is antimicrobial, anti-fungal, and anti-bacterial. Its moisturizing qualities help restore hair elasticity and health and aid in the prevention of water loss. Plus, this stuff is non-comedogenic (fancy talk for “doesn’t clog your pores”).

Now that we’ve looked at the ingredients, here are ten different ways to use Beardbrand Utility Oil.

1. BEARD OIL

At its core, Beardbrand Utility Oil is beard oil. It just happens to have so many other functions that we couldn’t justify reducing it to just a beard oil anymore. But it’s still the same legendary formula that provides lightweight, long-lasting conditioning for your beard.

Pump a nickel’s worth of oil into your palm and rub your hands together to evenly disperse the oil. Work your fingers through your beard and massage into the skin on your face beneath the beard. Rub any extra on your beard hairs. Don’t forget to inhale deeply and get a good whiff of that killer fragrance.

2. HAIR OIL

People have been using oil in their hair for thousands of years. If you have long hair, adding a few drops of Utility Oil can help prevent breakage and split ends while adding shine and frizz control. For those with curly or coarse hair, working a small amount of Utility Oil into the scalp and onto the hair can help prevent the hair from becoming too dry throughout the day and helps to keep hair looking healthy and shiny, and feeling softer.

Heads up: if you have an overly oily scalp, you’ll probably want to skip this.

3. FACE MOISTURIZER

One of the key ingredients in Utility Oil is abyssinian oil. As mentioned above, abyssinian oil is loaded with Omega 3 and 6 fatty acids and Vitamins A, B1, B2, B6, C, and E. All those fatty acids and antioxidants have been shown to slow the effects of aging.

Worried about acne? Don’t be. The ingredients in Utility Oil have a reputation for being non-comedogenic, meaning they don’t clog your pores as much as other oils. According to healthline, jojoba oil tends to be “a good option for oily or acne-prone skin, since it may help reduce acne and balance oil production.”

Gently massage a tiny amount of oil into clean, damp skin focusing on the forehead and cheeks. One pump of oil should be enough. Or, just use what's left on your hands after you’ve applied it to your beard or hair.

4. UNDER-EYE SERUM

The skin beneath the eyes is extra sensitive, prone to being puffy, and among the first places where fine lines begin to appear as we age. When considering ingredients for under-eye serums, jojoba oil is generally considered one of the best. Abyssinian oil also ranks pretty well for its antioxidants, which have been shown to reduce inflammation and the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

To do it, use one finger to gently massage a drop of Utility Oil into the skin beneath each eye.

5. FACE-CLEANSING OIL

It may sound counterintuitive, but using the oil cleansing method can be one of the best ways to wash your face.

Think about it like this—all cleansers contain surfactants, and even the gentlest of those can still leave your skin feeling dry. According to healthline, “using oils instead of traditional soap or detergent cleansers can also help protect the natural lipid layer of the skin and the “good” bacteria that live there.”

By using oil to wash your face, you’re, in theory, using the like-dissolves-like principle. In other words, the oil helps draw excess oil and dirt from your pores, allowing them to be washed away when rinsed.

To be clear, we aren’t suggesting that you ditch your soap or face wash altogether. But the oil cleansing method is a great way to wash your face at the end of the day before bed.

To do a basic oil cleanse, start with a quarter-sized amount of oil and massage gently into your face for 1 to 2 minutes. Use a damp cloth to rinse away and wipe off any oil left on your face.

6. EYEBROW SERUM

Maybe thicker, fuller eyebrows aren’t something you want. Hell, if you’re old enough, you’re probably doing everything you can to stop your eyebrows from turning into full-on caterpillars.

But if you find your eyebrows on the thinner side and want to beef them up, you can use Utility Oil as an eyebrow serum. Just work a small amount of oil into your eyebrows and gently brush with a boar’s hair Beard Brush (we recommend the Travel Brush). This will help keep the hair follicles clean and healthy, opening the door for better eyebrow growth.

Remember, the skin around your eyes is sensitive, so when we say brush gently, we mean brush gently.

7. PRE AND POST-SHAVE OIL

You probably won't want to completely eliminate your go-to shaving lubricant, but applying Utility Oil before you shave helps to soften the hair. Just apply Utility Oil to the area you plan to shave, let it soak in, and then use your shaving cream or gel. This enables you to get a cleaner, more effortless shave with less irritation.

You can use Utility Oil as a post-shave treatment. Remember the high fatty acid and antioxidant content of the ingredients we talked about above? Well, that helps to soothe irritated skin and can even help nicks and cuts heal quicker. Some of the barbers at the Beardbrand Barbershop even use Utility Oil on their clients after cleaning up their necks with the straight blade.

8. ALL-AROUND SKIN MOISTURIZER

Speaking of necks, let’s venture below the neck.

When that dry winter air settles in and leaves your knuckles and elbows chapped and cracked, just work some Utility Oil into the skin and let it work its magic. But don’t stop there—Utility Oil is your remedy wherever you suffer from dry skin.

Remember, jojoba oil is the primary essential oil in our formula. The chemical makeup of jojoba oil closely resembles sebum. Sebum is your skin’s natural moisturizing oil. So, using Beardbrand Utility Oil is about as close to the real thing as possible.

9. NAIL AND CUTICLE MOISTURIZER

If you hate hangnails or getting irritated skin around your fingernail, apply some Utility Oil to them once a day. This will help keep your cuticles hydrated, toughen up weak nails, and can even help stimulate nail growth. Try applying it at night and letting all that goodness get soaked up into your nails while you sleep.

10. TATTOO MOISTURIZER

Like Beardbrand Utility Balm, Utility Oil can also help keep your tattoos looking fresh. Of course, you should always follow the advice of your tattoo artist while your tattoo is still healing. But once healed, you have many options for keeping it looking awesome. Tattoos stay vibrant and retain their color longer when the skin is hydrated and nourished. You can rub a couple of drops of Utility Oil into your fully healed tattoos and help them maintain their look.
